ENGLAND DROP PEARCE

England recently parted ways with Stuart Pearce as the under 21 team manager after a run of poor results in the last three years at a time when a lot of progress was expected from the young team. The English FA have been searching for a replacement for the last few weeks. In the meantime, the team was scheduled to play against Scotland in the second week of August. The English FA have decided to ask manager Roy Hodgson to be in charge of the team for this one match, and this offer has been gladly accepted by the former Liverpool and West Brom manager.

England lost all three matches at the recent Euro under 21 championship, and were knocked out of the competition in the most disappointing manner. As a result, the English FA decided not to extend the contract of former Manchester city manager Stuart Pearce. Incidentally, the England senior team will also be playing on the same day, and it is learnt that Hodgson will be back at Wembley to take charge of the senior team as usual. The senior team will also be playing against Scotland. A number of candidates have been linked with the role in the last few weeks.

Former Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate and former Blackpool manager Michael Appleton are some of the names mentioned.

“There is an opportunity while the recruitment process goes on to work with this squad and it is something I very much wanted to do. I watch the under-21 fixtures and I was in Israel for the European Championship but, as a coach, nothing can beat the training field and the team hotel for getting to know players properly. In a World Cup year it makes absolute sense while there is the chance to do it,” said Hodgson.

HODGSON BACKS FERGIE

England national team manager Roy Hodgson has said that the achievements of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who will be stepping down from his post after more than 26 years in charge of the club, will probably never be equalled. Ferguson is regarded as one of the greatest managers in the history of the sport. He has managed to guide United to more than 30 major titles during his time at the club. This includes 13 league titles and two Champions League titles as well. He has decided to retire as a manager after more than 40 years in the sport.

He will be stepping down at the end of the season and Everton manager David Moyes is expected to be announced as his replacement. Ferguson was appointed as the manager of Manchester United back in 1986. Hodgson has revealed that Ferguson had more qualities than just being a very good manager. He has recalled how the 71-year-old has helped him at various stages in his career. Ferguson will be leaving United as the champions of England after getting the club to their 20th league title this season.

Hodgson, whose England team are fighting with Montenegro for a spot in the FIFA World Cup 2014, has wished the 71-year-old the best of health and happiness in his retirement career.

“It’s impossible to add anything really to all the tributes that have been made. I’m personally a little bit sad he’s not continuing, although I more than respect his decision to retire and hope he enjoys it. The only thing I can add is his human qualities. His footballing qualities and everything he achieved is never going to equalled. The epithet ‘the greatest’ is more than well deserved. I’m sure in terms of being available for the new man, he’ll be a godsend,” said the England manager.

STARS SHOULD PLAY

England manager Roy Hodgson has said that he wants his stars to be available for the friendly matches against the Republic of Ireland and Brazil at the end of the season. England will be playing against Ireland in the final week of May, while Brazil will be the opponents at the iconic Maracana stadium in Brazil just before the start of the Confederations cup. There have been growing concerns about the number of matches that players have been playing in recent months. As a result, a number of the high profile players have pulled out of recent friendly matches.

Hodgson does not want a repeat of this situation ahead of the crucial matches. He has said that the stars should not excuse themselves from the friendly matches if they want to be part of the England team. A number of the top teams from England will be having international commitments as part of their promotions. They are unlikely to be happy with losing their star players for meaningless friendly matches. Hodgson has been facing criticism from the media after a number of poor performances since he has taken over.

Hodgson’s team have been able to win only against minnows like San Marino and Moldova. They are currently second in the group stages.

“We didn’t win in Monte-negro because we didn’t retain possession and dominate the midfield in the second half as well as we did in the first 45 minutes. It’s no more complicated than that. But our ball retention wasn’t too bad against San Marino or in our previous game against Brazil, so I refuse to accept that because we didn’t play so well for 45 minutes, that it’s suddenly all about ball retention. Every time a team has a period when they don’t play to the very high levels of expectations,” said Hodgson.

HODGSON CONFIDENT

England are currently second in the World Cup qualifying group, but the manager Roy Hodgson has said that he is extremely confident that he will be top of the group by the end of the campaign. He has also said that he will settle for nothing less than winning the group. Hodgson said a few weeks ago that he believes that England have the ability to win the World Cup for the first time since 1966. The arrival of new players like Jack Wilshere and Danny Welbeck has rejuvenated the England team, which has suffered several exits in high-profile competitions at early stages.

England once again showed their renewed confidence in the recent friendly match against Brazil. Despite coming up against the five-time world champions, England played a lot of good football throughout the match. They also managed to win the match 2-1, which was their first victory over Brazil in more than two decades. This run of good results has led to the manager saying that he believes England will be able to win the group comfortably. The World Cup qualifying matches for England will resume with away trips against San Marino and Montenegro in the month of March.

Montenegro have made a great start to the World Cup qualifying campaign.”We are trying to win the group. What I might have said is if we don’t win the group, we will try and win the play-offs. But there is no question of us taking a play-off route. We were the top seeds in the group. We are seeded to win it. It doesn’t always happen of course. All teams like ourselves accept the responsibility and will do our best,” said Hodgson. England, though, have had just two victories in the last five matches in all competitions under Roy Hodgson.

BROWN RETURNS SOON

The Sunderland manager Martin O’Neill has revealed that he expects the defender Wes Brown to return from injury in the next few weeks. The defender has been out of the first team action for a long time, but he has recently started training with the first-team. The former Manchester United defender has been suffering from the knee injury that has kept him out of action for more than a year. The 33-year-old was amongst the three Manchester United players signed by the former manager Steve Bruce. Due to the poor form experienced by Sunderland, O’Neill could certainly do with the presence of Brown in the back.

O’Neill has now revealed that Brown is close to getting to first-team action after seeing a specialist back in October in a bid to solve his injury problem. Another injury problem for O’Neill has been the fitness of John O’Shea, who has missed the last two matches. He will once again be out of the first team action according to the manager. Chelsea will be the visitors to the Stadium of Light during the weekend. O’Neill could have certainly done with the presence of a player like John O’Shea given his incredible experience, but he will know how to face the European champions without the former Manchester United man.

“Wes is making good progress, although the number of times I’ve said that is unbelievable. He’s not that far away again from getting back into training. He’s had a few setbacks, but he’s working exceptionally hard. It’s been a frustrating time for him and it must get you down when you’re out for that length of time. He’s responding well at this minute, quite well. We were worried about it, but he is getting better by the day,” said Martin O’Neill, whose Sunderland are closer to the relegation zone.

HAPPY WITH PLAYOFFS

The England national team manager Roy Hodgson has said that he would be happy even if the England national team made it to the 2014 World Cup only in the play-offs. England are one of the favourites to qualify for the competition from the group stages after they have made a good start to the qualification campaign, but the presence of several high-profile teams like Belgium and Ukraine mean that qualification is not guaranteed for the team. Further, they are already in the second place behind Montenegro, who currently at the table by four points ahead of England.

Roy Hodgson’s men recently suffered draws against Ukraine and Poland, which have meant that we have not been able to occupy the top spot going into the new year. England were also recently defeated 4-2 by the spectacular Swedish team. Hodgson has said that the most important thing is to play in the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and it does not matter whether the team qualifies through the play-offs or directly from the group stages. England lost failed to qualify for a major tournament back in 2008 when they did not appear for the Euro 2008. Hodgson has suggested that the current crop of England players do not need any additional motivation apart from the prospect of playing in the World Cup.

“If we don’t succeed in being No1, I’d be more than happy to go into the play-offs. The important thing is we get one of those two positions. The group we are in was quite underestimated but that is often the case. I can assure the England football fans there is nothing the players want more. They don’t need motivation, they need to perform,” said Hodgson. England will be playing against the world cup host Brazil in a friendly match in February.

YOUNGSTERS CALLED UP

The England manager Roy Hodgson has said that he has called up a number of young players for the friendly match against Sweden in the hope that they will be able to outperform the older players and qualify for the 2014 World Cup in style. England will be playing against Sweden in a friendly match, and the England manager has decided to omit a number of high-profile first-team players partly because of injuries. The Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney and the Arsenal midfielder Theo Walcott will be amongst the high-profile names absent from the squad. In their place, Roy Hodgson has included the three young strikers in the form of Daniel Sturridge, Danny Welbeck, and Zaha.

This is the first time that the Crystal Palace winger Zaha has been included in the squad. Many have been raising eyebrows, but it is due to the excellent performances shown by the 20-year-old in the Championship according to the England manager. He has said that it is highly unlikely that a number of players like Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard will be at the peak of their careers when the 2014 FIFA World Cup kicks off. Hence, he has challenged the likes of Zaha to replace these players.

“There’s no doubt we’re going to see a vast improvement over the coming ten years, and I think you see it already if you look at the young players that are coming through today. Oxlade-Chamberlain, Welbeck, Cleverley, Bertrand, Gibbs, Wilshere – in all of these players you can see that technically they are of a very good level. It can only get better,” said the England manager ahead of the friendly match with Sweden. England have made a great start to the World Cup qualifying campaign and they are undefeated in the matches played so far.

TERRY STEPS BACK

The Chelsea captain and the England defender John Terry has said that he will be retiring from international football with immediate effect. The 31-year-old is currently set to undergo an FA charge over the alleged racism of the QPR defender Anton Ferdinand. However, it is thought that the Chelsea captain is extremely disappointed that he is charged by the FA, despite being found not guilty by a separate trial in a court. This is not the first time John Terry has been put into a precarious situation by the English FA. Now, he has decided to that he will finally pull himself out of the international duty.

This news comes as a major shock to the football world due to the fact that John Terry has been one of the best defenders for England over the last nine seasons. He made his debut for the England national team back in 2003 and he has played in 78 matches since then. He has scored six goals during his nine years. He was the captain of the national team under Fabio Capello before being stripped of in the first place due to an affair with the England teammate Wayne Bridge’s girlfriend. He was later reinstated by Fabio Capello before being removed from the post by the English FA.

“I am today announcing my retirement from international football. Representing and captaining my country is what I dreamed of as a boy and it has been a truly great honour. I have always given my all and it breaks my heart to make this decision. I want to wish Roy and the team every success for the future. I am making this statement today in advance of the hearing of the FA disciplinary charge because I feel the FA, in pursuing charges against me where I have already been cleared in a court of law, have made my position with the national team untenable,” said John Terry.

WHO WILL BE FIRST OUT?

We’re only a few short weeks into the new Premier League season and pressure is already mounting for some unfortunate teams and managers. Some fans seem to have already decided that Brendan Rodgers isn’t the right man for the Liverpool job, and there seems to be a host of fans and pundits waiting for him to fail. Andre Villas Boas is in a similar position – no wins so far and a chequered managerial past makes him the subject of much media derision.

Liverpool have had a chaotic summer to say the least. They failed in many of their transfer attempts yet managed to offload the majority of their recognised strikers. Kuyt, Bellamy and Carroll have all left leaving Liverpool with only two real recognised strikers. (more…)

EXPERIENCE COUNTS

England manager Roy Hodgson has said that he is extremely confident that the experienced players like Michael Carrick and Frank Lampard still have a lot to give for the England national team. The England manager decided to recall Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick, who missed out on the opportunity to play at the Euro 2012, for the friendly match against Italy. England managed to win the match quite convincingly 2-1, while they had earlier lost in the quarter-final match against the Euro 2012 finalist on penalties. Roy Hodgson has said that the return of both Michael Carrick and Frank Lampard was crucial in securing the victory.

Many have been predicting that the England manager will not be calling of the Chelsea midfielder and the Manchester United midfielder due to the age. Many expected Roy Hodgson to utilise a much younger squad in the hope of being prepared for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The 34-year-old Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard is entering into the twilight of his career, but has not ruled out retiring from the international scene claiming that he still has a lot to offer for the national team. It proved to be the case after he was instrumental in the 2-1 win over Italy.

“We deserved victory over 90 minutes and there were some very good performances. When you miss players like Lampard and Carrick because they are not available you are maybe going to regret it because of the quality they bring. It is not about systems, it is about players. The three in midfield passed very well and our wide men worked very hard, but everyone played their part. I don’t think there was a great difference between what we did in the Euros and what we did tonight,” said the England manager Roy Hodgson.
